Steps for Building – Hobo Railroad 1186 By James E. Harter Jr.
This modeling project has been designed to allow the model railroad enthusiast to build a highly detailed and accurate model of the Plymouth and Lincoln Railroad’s - Hobo Railroad #1186. The Plymouth and Lincoln Railroad is the parent company of the Hobo Railroad of Lincoln N.H. and the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad of Weirs, New Hampshire. A little history of the Hobo Railroad # 1186 includes that it was originally delivered from Alco as a model S3 in 1952 to the Boston and Maine Railroad in their early diesel switcher paint scheme of black with white lettering and a red and white set of nose stripes. In the 70’s, during its long service with the B&M, it received a paint scheme known as the “blue dip” paint scheme. The B&M, like many other railroads, chose a simpler less expensive paint scheme to help keep their maintenance costs down during that period. No matter how you decide to build your engine, the results will be well worth the effort and enjoyed for many years to come. This project pack is designed for building the Hobo R.R. #1186. Be advised that some minor modifications to the engine frame and the optional snowplow are required when building the Hobo version of this engine. Also it is sometimes difficult to find the Atlas switcher engines, you may have to check with more than one hobby shop. Parts List:
